As we all know about What & How of On Page SEO techniques. But in this era where Google is constantly updating their algorithms to give best to their users, so we also need to comply with its strategies and work according to it.

As per my suggestion, the On Page SEO is very consequential part if you want to rank a website well on SERPs. To achieve maximum exposure Off Page & on Page SEO are both important. On Page, SEO always proves to be a huge helping hand for Off Page.

There are many On Page SEO techniques we know, but following are the basic as well as most important ones, and we really need to work on them well if we want desired results. So here we go…

1. Content

We all know and heard thousands of time in our SEO carrier that “content is the King”. And this true! Your content is one of the important factors that represent you in to search engines and most importantly users.

We can also say that a website with good-quality content can really perform well with or without SEO, and a website with bad or low quality content cannot survive with or without SEO.

So following is some take aways regarding what is considered to be a good content:

Original Content: The content on a website must be original. Whether it is articles, images, videos, infographics, etc. No copies or re-writes of existing content should be there.

Published Content: If you’re publishing the content written by you on your website that is published elsewhere, then it is also not good for your website.

Content with text: If you’re posting a video or presentation on your website, then it should be accompanied with some text description. And if you’re posting some infographic or image then describe it what it is all about.

2. Meta Titles, Meta Description and Formatting of the Page

While crawling a particular page search engine crawlers read the title, description, main heading and images to understand what the page is all about. And then they place the page in SERP position after considering other factors like off page SEO, domain authority, competition, etc. So following are some points that needs to be considered.

Page Title: The Meta Title of a page must be unique & descriptive within 66 characters

Meta Description: The page’s Meta description also needs to be unique and descriptive within 150-180 characters (with space). This is what users see on SERP and crawlers read to understand about the page. So it is our responsibility to write unique description that users prefer clicking our link rather than choosing some other.

Page Formatting:  H1 & H2 tags plays important role in achieving the ranking as well as for making users understand about the page. The important terms on the page should be highlighted with bold, italic or underline. The content must be readable with good font size and divided in paragraphs of 4-5 lines.

Images: It’s always good to have images on the page as it makes the page catchy as well as interesting. But always consider following points while using images on the page:

a) Use images of small sizes. It should not increase the load time of page.

b) Use original images and if you are using the existing images from the web, mention the source of it.

c) Always use alt tags to describe what the image is all about. It also helps search engines to read the images.

d) Use descriptive file name. It’s always better to have image with file name “nhl-authentic-jersey.jpg” than “images2013.jpg”.

5. Internal Linking:

It is also important from SEO point of view to have pages internally linked within the website, because:

If you go through the tutorial “How Search Works” by Google, then you will find that first thing that crawlers do is they follow links they find. So when crawlers will come to your page they will follow the links and spend more time on the website if internal linking is done. Else after reading the text they will go out. So it helps in proper crawling of the website. It also helps in telling the search engines about other important pages of the website.

It also helps in increasing time of a visitor on the website. As visitor will come across various links in the content so he/she will go to the other pages also. It helps in improving number of page visited and time spends on your site.

Best practices for Internal linking:

a) Don’t use only keywords for internal linking.

A 404 error comes when the page doesn’t exist or user mistypes the URL or if there is a broken link. It is really very important to configure these pages. The default “The page cannot be found” puts a bad impression on the user mind and affects the user experience as well. Below points can be considered for properly configuring a 404 page:

  • Give some information to the user about what happened rather than just displaying “Not Found”
  • Have a consistent design for 404 pages within the website.
  • Navigate the user to some other pages of the website.
  • Disallow all the 404 pages in robots.txt

Page speed is a crucial factor. If pages take longer time to load than it affects the user experiences as well as increases the bounce rate. Page speed is also a ranking factor and Google has updated regarding this many times. Fast websites always improves the user experience and encourages user to come back.
